Model Railways

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: Monthly
Venue: Members' Homes

This Group was developed by and for model railway enthusiasts. Members build their own model railways. Model railways have evolved significantly over the years generally becoming increasingly sophisticated mostly as a result of computerisation. These can vary in their scale and sophistication across different Members.

Some Members have very elaborate models that they have built and developed over many years. The Group’s Members take turns to host meetings and Members sometimes take their model trains to run on the tracks of host Members.

Members therefore share equipment, information about the latest developments in model railway equipment and personal experiences, learning new model building techniques from each other.

This Group meets monthly at different Members’ homes and would welcome new Members to join their sessions, you do not have to possess your own model railway. They would also like to extend this Group to Members who have an interest in model village making.

Sally Rooks, Epping Forest u3a Group Coordinator, paid a visit to the Model Railway Group, hosted by the Group’s Convenor, Alan Foster.

This very welcoming visit, gave Sally the opportunity to hear how each Group Member started their interest for this hobby and how they still regularly engage in this pastime. She also had the experience to operate the controls to drive some of Alan’s model trains, along the extensive tracks which he has self-built along with the model houses, miniature stations, trees, farm and other landscape features.
